7 Thoughts To Keep You Moving Forward

Without action, the dream never appears. I always asked people to imagine the success they desire, but we can’t dream ourselves to health and happiness, it takes action. We can’t hope our way to a new reality, we only get there through action.

2. In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision. Dalai Lama
Everything is built twice, once in our heads and once in reality. Many goals fail when time for development is cut short in the rush to production. I can’t emphasis enough the importance of allowing adequate time to think through a new concept. Then do it, evaluate it, tweak it and do it again. Slowing down actually speeds up success.

3. Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, go out and get busy. Dale Carnegie
Action is the test track of life. When we begin any new action we feel uncomfortable but with continued effort our comfort, conviction and clarity grow. When we practice to permanence, positive change is ours. Even with failure we learn but without action, we come up short every time.

4. Action expresses priorities. Mahatma Gandhi
We only have so many hours in a day. I often ask clients to list their 5 top life issues along with their 5 top time users. When we compare the list, real priorities become clear. When we work to get these lists into alignment we adjust our actions and move toward a more balanced and happy life.

5. Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Thomas Jefferson
Pressure reveals our true selves. When we squeeze oranges, we get orange juice. Sounds a little silly but only what’s on the inside comes out under pressure. Want to improve how we relate to the world? Change what’s on the inside first.

6. When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps. Confucius
We eat goals and elephants in the same way, one bite at a time. Often people choose goals and time frames that will never fit. The SMART goals concept may be a cliché but it works. Make sure each step on the path to the goal is achievable and measurable within the determined time frame.

Many successes come from alternative uses discovered during quiet reflection. Post-it note pads, corn flakes, the microwave oven, Saccharin, potato chips, Play-Doh all became realities upon reflection of a primary discovery.

The Daily Six Works, at Work!
I want to give you an overview how to change focus, minds and culture.

Not just the warm and fuzzy but also the practical and tangible examples of why these ideas work and how to get them to work in your organization.

I remember speaking at an event where Les Brown was speaking too. He said two things that have always stuck with me: 1. I will not say anything new tonight, 2. If you do what I tell you it will change your life forever. So change is in the doing not in the knowing.

The Daily Six tenets are very much like that, they are designed to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety and allow them to develop, maintain, and enhance a sense of balance. Individuals who regularly use the material in The Daily Six say they have a sense of calm and the ability to maintain peace of mind under all circumstances. Organizations who utilize these ideas become more: open, productive, connected and positive.

As we look around at the current issues in today's headlines we see behavior indicative of poor leadership allowing for bad decision-making and a systemic breakdown in corporate culture across many industries.

To rebuild confidence with people both internally and externally these organizations and the individuals who run them need to find and use a clear and easily discernable path, which uses a simple moral compass everyone can follow. When everyone is clear and headed in the right direction people know what is expected, what will be rewarded, what will not and making right decisions a simple by-product.

Let’s build this moral compass together. Starting where everything must start, with willingness. Willing to pick the right path, and not some pie in the sky path leading to the singing of Kumbaya but a path the leads not just to high ethical standards but also lead to a high productivity, low turn over and a quicker and more nimble organization.

Here’s how The Daily Six can work at work.

Service builds spirit and values that strengthen the leader and the team of any size. It changes your focus from “What’s in it FOR me” to “What’s in it FROM me”.

* Love & Forgiveness - Love - is defined as: “Seeing the needs of others and treating their needs as important as your own”. This works at home or in customer service. Showing genuine care and interest in the success of people around you strengthens the sense of community and blows the top off productivity. Forgiveness - allows you to move forward with a clear head each day. Don’t let the grudges of past experiences distract you from the present moment. Move from judging into serving and supporting. Hard decisions must be made, make them and move on. Let past pains, resentments and angers go. Move positively into each new day.

* Gratitude - underlies the whole program. Focusing on gratitude frees you from the bondage of negative emotions, which block the positive effects of the first 5 steps. Being grateful for and valuing your life, family, work and co- workers changes your whole perspective. You live in the moment: the only way to affect real change. You learn something from every experience and embrace both the good and bad ones. When people feel valued, REALLY valued, they know it and performance soars.

* Action - separates The Daily Six from every other plan. Without action, this is simply an intellectual process that does not facilitate change. Action facilitates change. Leaders need to be seen as taking action. Become driven by simple actions that will create a change of focus. By using all the other steps the actions you take will build up the confidence and effectiveness of you and others in your organizations.

As you become focused, caring and supportive using The Daily Six you will become a strong, confident, and supportive person. You will attract people with like skills and qualities, creating a circle of success that repeats day after day and year after year.

Willingness creates an open and honest mindset across the entire organization. People stop moving at the “speed of don’t screw up” accelerating productivity. Innovation and results are valued over rules and status quo. An entrepreneurial spirit is created when people feel they can question policy and direction without fear of backlash or reprisal. Departments communicate both horizontally and vertically because they understand and value that success for one means success for all. People understand and value their personal and departmental contribution to organizational successes. You will be approachable and connected to the people in your life both personally and professionally. Success breeds success with this mindset you will strengthen any division, organization or family.

People and organizations that practice willingness read more, learn more, share more. Management supports and focuses on the success of those below them and when people feel someone else cares about and is focused on their success they will produce at record levels.

With willingness you will: believe in and find the highest real value in yourself and others; with willingness you will step outside your comfort zone; be open to a much more innovative, interactive, productive and profitable organization.

What is Corporate Culture?
Corporate culture is something that relates to an organization’s working environment and can be defined as combination of shared values, traditions, culture, vision, customers, philosophy, policies and principles of an organization. All together they create the professional atmosphere, which affects the behavior and performance of the entire organization. With great corporate culture people are excited to go to work, they are proud of themselves and their company and the clients are completely satisfied with the products and services being provided.

Corporate culture can be seen from three perspectives:

For the employer, it is simply the implementation of effective systems and processes that will allow great corporate culture to develop (see my articles on transparency, motivation and buy-in). Through words and actions employers must make sure their people know they are highly valued and their input and opinions are welcome and encouraged. To insure a positive work environment, a smart employer hires for attitude first and aptitude second, not the other way around. It is much easier to teach someone the technical or hard skills of the job than it is to teach someone the soft skills of a positive mindset, leadership, strategic thinking and team building. An organization with a positive culture is open to input, ideas and feedback from all levels throughout the organization.

To the employee, corporate culture is determined not just by the working environment, salary and benefits, but also current stress levels, the ability to provide input, a sense of control over career growth and direction, a feeling of self-growth and accessibility to management. When employees see their organization as welcoming and supportive, they respond with positive attitudes and commitment to the organization and its culture.

To the customer, dealing with an organization that has a strong corporate culture has many advantages, both tangible and intangible. Customers want to deal with an organization that does the right thing, at the right price and at the right time. When that is not possible, customers want an organization that will proactively reach out to communicate the issues and the solutions. They also want to feel confident in the quality of product or service offered, as well as, the people within the organization. Lastly and most importantly, customers want to feel valued and appreciated.

Need for Corporate Culture Change

When an organization plans to develop a new product, new service or create a shift in behavior, it is a great time to examine and refine corporate culture. In order for the changes to be successful, leaders must work across all levels of the entire organization. Management must clarify and clearly express the reasons for change, begin to drive decisions by building consensus, develop open communication and secure commitment from everyone. When this approach is used, organizations find there is much less stress and the desired plans or changes become easier to handle and much quicker to implement.

How to Create Corporate Change

When changing corporate culture, there are primarily two types of personalities that significantly impact the implementation of the change. The first type are the people who are supple; they see this change as a new opportunity and take it with enthusiasm, excitement and full energy. The second type are the people who are rigid; they are resistant to any type of change, are frustrated by it and see it as a form of defeat. This is why it is vital for leaders to communicate clearly and stand strongly behind the mission and its objective and implement the change with a positive “we can do it” attitude. Rely on those energized by the changes and work together towards a complete buy-in by everyone. Offer training and support as needed and anyone unable to embrace the changes, ultimately needs to be replaced in order to secure the growth and success of the organization.

I have been building companies for over 30 years and know with certainty that when organizations are willing to constructively and optimistically work through these types of changes and embrace their corporate culture, they create a competitive advantage within their industry that makes them, second to none.

Common Sense Laws of Leadership
Leadership skills are must to have thing for successful entrepreneurs, managers and executives. The success or failure of my department, division or business depends on the quality of my decisions. Everyday business leaders need to rely on excellent management and leadership skills to drive the business in the proper direction that leads towards success.

It is all about how you handle the people and react to the problem situations. Leadership skills help to support yourself and your employees and help them stay focused to achieve the organization objectives. A great leader sets the goals and prepare appropriate plan to achieve those goals.

Leader must have these skills to lead the organization in a better way.

Here is my list of fundamental but very effective skills that every leader should master. I call them, the common sense laws of leadership.

Empathic Detachment - the ability to listen and connect with someone and then detach when they leave so the problem doesn’t become yours

The Rock in the Pond - Importance of and power of each leader’s mood in the of their department or division each day.

Model the Behavior You Expect - requires managers to reflect on the behavior their staff see of them each day.

Be a conduit to their Success - helps leaders and managers to move from telling to teaching

Change the People or Change the People - encouragement to teach, encourage and develop your people but then be honest with yourself with the people that don’t change.

What you Allow you Teach - teaches the importance of consistency everyday in the lives of leaders.

Set Expectation and Hold People Accountable - the importance of creating the expectations of all people and the importance of accountability in the development of the expectations.

You can’t over include and you can’t over communicate - addresses the two critical issues of willingness to include others into the management process and open up communication even when it is uncomfortable. Help make management more transparent.

Hopes and Dreams don’t come from Hoping and Dreaming - the component of action vs. planning in the accomplishment of goals. Eliminates “Paralysis by Analysis”.

They don’t know what they don’t know - the realization that assumptions of what others know can be the recipe for the downfall of leaders.

Everyone Wants to Be but No One wants to Become - the importance of daily movement toward a goal and not to let failures and problems hold you back.

Clairvoyance is not part of the job. - The importance of communication in the leadership process. This will be critical information as to how to get and give direction and suggestions to maximize productivity.

Motivation and Buy-In as a Competitive Advantage
“Motivation and Buy-In” are like everything else in life, always cycling up or cycling down; there is no static position. So that means that energy and effort must be applied continually and consistently to create and maintain a high performing organization with the momentum needed for Motivation and Buy-In.

The cornerstone to successful Motivation and Buy-In is trust. The level of trust that exists within your organization will determine how hard and how long you will have to work to get your organization fully motivated and completely committed. These four simple ideas used everyday will generate the results you want:

#1. Trust: To build trust you begin with a more honest, open and inclusive communication style and more being trusting of others. Trust is the pipeline through which all good business practices flow. Trust instills a sense of confidence without the presence of worry or suspicion. Without trust, people move at the speed of don’t screw up or in other words, the speed they can move without getting into any type trouble. That is not the speed you want for your organization. If people feel their input is unwanted or their mistakes will be met with criticism or possibly dismissal then mood and morale will be bad, turnover and absenteeism will be high, motivation will be low and buy-in will be nonexistent. The cycle is heading down.

Trust is maintained by the consistent achievement of personal and organizational goals. With trust, workers move away from a self-protection, begin to take risks, look for new ways to improve workflow and exceed expectations. When goals are achieved and exceeded, management’s trust and confidence in the whole process is strengthened. The way to achieve Motivation and Buy-in is through trust and the key to building trust is the willingness of management to assimilate the next three ideas. The cycle is heading up.

#2. Transparency: Allowing people, at all levels, to have a clear understanding of an organization’s overall goals and objectives, as well as an understanding of the importance of their own personal and departmental roles in the success of the organization. When times are tough, making sure you have transparency in your management becomes even more critical to the success of your business. When employees understand the issues that owners face on a regular basis, they are more invested (buy-in) in the solutions. And when organizations encourage frequent two-way communication, at all levels, they generate a level of positive energy (motivation) making it easier to find new ideas and/or solutions. Change is much easier to implement with open communication, support and trust. Very quickly employees do more than buy-into change, they own it.

As management willingly opens up its thinking and decision making processes, the organization becomes more transparent and “same side of the table thinking” begins. Everyone begins to understand the issues and complexities of decision-making. The entire staff knows what is expected of them individually and collectively and they will be much more supportive of any changes that are necessary to ensure the success of the organization. With transparency, employees are more motivated and they feel an increased sense of self-value and self-worth that is directly related to their own efforts. It also becomes much more likely that their wages will go up because profits will go up and stay up and levels of absenteeism and turnover will go down. And that’s a good start.

#3. Treat Everyone the Same but Differently: Offering praise and rewards based on individual personality style. Treating everyone the same is a no-brainer but often times it is forgotten. Consciously or unconsciously all of us connect better with some people more than others. And while its just human nature, making that kind of mistake can ruin morale, interfere with productivity and occasionally create some discrimination issues. The most effective way to communicate and reward people is to base it on individual need and personality style. The rewards for comparable work must be of the same value but not necessarily the same. For example, one person may need public acknowledgement of their successes in order to be motivated while another may be embarrassed by that method and instead require some one-on-one time for personal recognition. A good manager or management team needs to know their people. They need to understand what motivates the individual and respond accordingly. It may seem like a lot of extra work, but believe me, the dividends are worth the effort.

#4. Change the people or Change the people: Providing training and support to improve and update the skills of your people or recognizing when the time comes to let someone go. Good management is focused on making sure that everyone in the organization has the necessary training and support to maximize their ROI. However, once it becomes obvious that an employee is not living up to his/her potential, a good manager will make the necessary change. Do everything possible to change or improve the people but if that isn’t possible, then change or replace the people.

Change takes time and how long it will take depends on the shape you’re organization is in when you begin this process. Remember, the way to achieve Motivation and Buy-in is through trust and the key to building trust is the willingness of management to assimilate all four ideas; Trust, Transparency, Treat Everyone the Same but Differently, Change the People or Change the People. So make the commitment and don’t give up. You and your organization are worth the work.

Strategic Thinking - The Key to Organizational Success
Everyone knows Strategic Planning is critical to the long-term organization success.

Sadly, not all Strategic Planning turns out as successfully as we would like. A Strategic Plan is a highly structured, tangible product with specific times for implementation (usually one to five years) and very worthy objectives. The finished product is highly touted and initially creates fanfare within the organization but many times the enthusiasm is short lived and very quickly the Strategic Plan is left sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Even with the best intentions, creating and sustaining positive change is difficult.

Traditionally, Strategic Plans are designed to create organizational change. They require communication and advocacy to bring about the desired results or there is a risk of generating unnecessary fear, eroding trust and slowing productivity to a crawl. That is why developing an organization filled with Strategic Thinkers is so critical. While Strategic Planning paints the big picture intended to effectively guide an organization forward, it is Strategic Thinking that gives the organization its ability to effectively and consistently implement critical strategic goals. Strategic Thinkers are workers, managers and executives who clearly understand the Strategic Plan and are focused on turning its goals into reality. They are empowered and encouraged to identify strengths and weaknesses within the current flow of goods and services. The implementation of Strategic Thinking and training Strategic Thinkers throughout an organization will determine the success of the Strategic Plan and the organization itself.

Strategic Thinking allows your management team to generate a vibrant and consistent mindset, which spreads throughout the organization allowing everyone to more deeply understand the way the organization works. Strategic Thinking creates a living and breathing Strategic Plan and drive’s good decision-making.

Strategic Thinkers always ask themselves:

* What are we doing now, that should stop?
* What are we not doing now, that should start?
* What are we doing now, that we should keep doing but only with improvement?

Strategic Thinking gives everyone a powerful sense of connection and a much clearer understanding of what it takes to be successful as a whole and not just as a department or a division.

Seven Concepts of Strategic Thinking

1. I am a part of a greater whole. I am only successful when we are all successful.
2. We always keep our focus on the guiding principles of our organizational Mission, Vision and Values.
3. Everyone is an equal part of the whole. We value and desire input from all members of our community. No one is excluded.
4. Each daily action guides us successfully toward our overall Strategic Plan.
5. We agree to put aside personal issues and conflicts for the successful achievement of our Strategic Plan.
6. I am committed to be an active participant throughout this process. As a Strategic Thinker I will continually review how my work and behavior affects my unit and how my unit’s work and behavior affects my organization as a whole.
7. We agree that all feedback and suggestions will be made with a positive focus on the problem and not a negative focus on an individual or unit.

Strategic Thinking creates a powerful sense of commitment, which in turn delivers a highly positive and productive workforce and a profitable organization.

8 Powerful Habits That Successful People Practice Daily
You are a product of your habits. Everything that happens to you is in some way a function of your habits. Your social circle, your financial situation and your mental and physical health all arise as a product of your habits. Have you ever wondered, on a long day at work, how people like Tony Robbins, Richard Branson, Mark Cuban or Elon Musk have become so incredibly successful?

Exceptional and successful people have built their life on the power of routine. They understand intuitively that small changes compounded over time translate to spectacular results. If you're feeling overwhelmed or think your life is out of your control, you can learn from leaders and thinkers like these.

Just over a decade ago I wrote a book called the Daily Six. The book was a compilation of over thirty years of experience in the corporate world and it articulates the need of practicing small changes consistently. When small changes become habits we will see a major shift in our personal life and professional life which will pave the way for accomplishments that were once only dreams.

Here are eight habits that you can begin practicing today.

1. Focus on the good things. You begin each day with a choice - focusing on the negative or positive things in your life. The most successful people know that focusing on the negatives only drains their energy and leaves them with less to work with for the rest of the day. You can eliminate a lot of stress and anxiety in your life by choosing to focus on the positive things in your life. Uncomfortable situations will always be around, but you can choose to focus on the good that comes out of them.

2. Make time for solitude. You are surrounded by distractions from the moment your wake up. Instant messenger notifications, unread emails and work commitments are a staple of modern life. However, if you want to improve your understanding of yourself and the way you interact with the world, it is crucial to spend some time by yourself every day.

3. Set goals and achieve them. Successful people don't leave too much of their day to chance. They wake up with a clear idea of what they want to accomplish on that day. If you're currently struggling with your job or business, think about your long-term plans. Is what you are doing moving you closer or farther away from where you need to be? Are you letting your day be driven by external stimuli? If so, try to be more proactive and deliberate about how you live your life. Set short and long-term goals and focus on achieving them.

4. Work on your mindset. Successful people are perennial students. They understand that even though they have achieved a lot of success, there's still a lot to learn. Start your day by devoting some time to things that improve the way you think about things. Whether it's a meditation practice, a TED talk or an inspirational podcast, make developing your mindset a priority in your life.

5. Associate with other successful and inspirational people. Nothing drains your energy like spending too much time with people who are comfortable living a life of mediocrity. Even though you may not consciously notice it happening, you adopt the habits of the people you spend the most time with. You can use this to your advantage by seeking out and spending time with people who inspire you and have lots of positive energy.

6. Clean up your diet. The food you eat plays a massive part in determining the quality of your life. If you eat clean, you'll have more energy and clarity throughout the day. You literally are what you eat, so don't take your diet lightly.

7. Exercise regularly. Exercise offers a lot of physical and mental benefits. It releases endorphins into your bloodstream which raises your sense of well-being. Studies have shown that regular exercise enhances neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

8. Be grateful. Gratitude is an extremely powerful tool for success and happiness. When you're grateful for all of the things you already have, you'll have much less stress about your life situation. Make time each day to express your gratitude for the life you have. Habits are more powerful than you can imagine. Successful people aren't born with a special gene. They're regular people. They just have different habits. If you want to live the life of your dreams, start changing your habits. ***
